We would love to hear from you

The construction industry is notoriously fragmented and can be horrifying to work out. It can range from major infrastructure projects to handyman works. There are no minimum standards, in fact any standards are dictated by the nature of the project, the more important the job, the better the standard. It must be said that many of the major projects are built to a very high standard indeed. By and large the standard of products has improved greatly over the years.

The only serious piece of advice from the government seems to be “caveat emptor”- buyer beware. This is insane when we consider that we are talking about the most important purchase that you are ever likely to make, and doesn’t exactly inspire.

One of the biggest challenges facing any householder is how to pick the right project and/or the right contractor.

Some projects are best left alone and avoided like the plague, but which one? Good advice can help you avoid the biggest pitfalls, so how do you decide? Selecting the right project is a matter of personal choice. If you have no experience with this type of work, I can help you to come to that decision. Some projects are often conceived without considering the downsides and, therefore, should be bypassed, saving you a fortune and cancelling out the anguish.

Where do I start?

Having decided on a project and rejected the DIY route, which contractor? We are always being told to get three quotes for a job, but how do you determine which ones to choose? Recommendations are generally good, after that, it’s a minefield. Indeed do you want a contractor? Sometimes it can be good to pull in separate trades as required, with a project manager overseeing the job or doing it yourself. Careful, but it’s your choice.
